Le Lac du Salagou

The Lac du Salagou is a reservoir lake of the Salagou river. It’s situated in the middle of the department of Hérault, approx. 37 km (approx. 23 miles) from the Prieuré Saint Martial, 40 minutes by car or 2 hours by bike.

The lake has a depp blue colour and the landscape around the lake has a deep red colour as well as impressiv rock formations due to the geological conditions and to the presence of iron oxides.

Originally, this artificial lake was meant to be used as a flood protection system and as a reservoir for the watering of orchards. Nowadays, it serves mainly as a tourist destination, but it’s partially also used to fight forest fires. You can also take a delicious swim in the see: The average water temperature in summer is about 28°C (82°F).

All in all, the Lac du Salagou is a particularly recommendable excursion and we advise you to take your bicycle or your e-bike and ride the 42 km (26 miles) around the see – it’s worth it! Because it’s the best way to immerse into the breathtaking landscape of the Lac du Salagou.
